US special forces begin pulling out of the hunt for LRA Joseph Kony.

US special forces on Wednesday begin pulling out of Central African Republic where they deployed in 2011 to help hunt the brutal LRA warlord Joseph Kony. The move, which was announced last month, will see US troops pulling out of the country’s east where they have been helping Ugandan forces track down rebels from the feared Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). “The time has come to move forward because the organisation itself is really in a survival mode,” General Thomas Waldhauser, head of the US military’s Africa Command (AFRICOM) said in a telephone briefing last week. One of Africa’s longest-surviving rebel groups, the LRA has terrorised parts of central Africa for 30 years. Several years ago it counted several thousand fighters but today has fewer than…

Advocating for continued support to refugees in Rwanda

UNHCR representative in Rwanda, Azam Saber has said that the matter of refuge fund reduction is worrying, promising to find a solution. “We have the matter of inadequate funds but we are working hard to convince donors to keep pouring in funds in Rwanda because it is used effectively,” he said. Saber explained that they ensure good management of food donations in Rwanda despite their scarcity promising the support won’t be reduced. “You have to spread this message that food is security and part of basic health needs. It would be hard to protect refugees without food; it would pose a serious health threat and theft of food among themselves,” he said. Refugees funds remain insufficient despite the rise of the number of people in…

FRANCE: Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen to fight for presidency

Centrist Emmanuel Macron has gone through to the second round of the French election, where he will face far-right leader Marine Le Pen. Mr Macron, a former banker, is seen as a political newcomer – and ran without the backing of an established party. After topping Sunday’s vote, he is now favourite to win the run-off on 7 May. It is the first time in six decades that neither of France’s main left-wing or right-wing parties has had a candidate in the second round. Mr Macron won 23.8% of votes in the first round, while Ms Le Pen took 21.5%. The turnout was high, at almost 79%. The nearest challengers, centre-right François Fillon and hard-left Jean-Luc Mélenchon, fell behind with just over 19% each. But…
