NATURE: The sound of the wind in the trees can physically change our mind and bodily systems

The gentle burbling of a brook, or the sound of the wind in the trees can physically change our mind and bodily systems, helping us to relax. New research explains how, for the first time. Researchers at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) found that playing ’natural sounds’ affected the bodily systems that control the flight-or-fright and rest-digest autonomic nervous systems, with associated effects in the resting activity of the brain. While naturalistic sounds and ’green’ environments have frequently been linked with promoting relaxation and wellbeing, until now there has been no scientific consensus as to how these effects come about. Deaths up by 5% since 1990: study

Mortality could rise even further as major tobacco companies aggressively target new markets The percentage of men and women who use tobacco every day has dropped in most nations since 1990, but the total number of smokers and tobacco-related deaths has increased, a consortium of researchers reported Thursday. Mortality could rise even further as major tobacco companies aggressively target new markets, especially in the developing world, they warned in a report, published in the medical journal The Lancet. One in four men and one in 20 women smoked daily in 2015, according to the Global Burden of Diseases report, compiled by hundreds of scientists. That was a significant drop compared to 25 years earlier, when one in three men, and one in 12 women, lit…

No talks with Besigye. Period

Speaking to FDC leaders in Teso on Tuesday in Soroti, the four-time presidential candidate said President Yoweri Museveni was seeking him out demanding for dialogue. Ofwono Opondo the government spokesperson dismissed the remarks saying Besigye is doing all this for “political grandstanding and comedy”. He said no one in government has approached Besigye for talks and challenged Sweden to front evidence of such talks or the person who they are purporting to be the go-between. “We would however want to challenge the Swedish government to come clean. Who in particular from government approached them?” Ofwono asked. Besigye who still disputes the outcome of the 2016 presidential election blamed the government yesterday of imprisoning him before he could be allowed to prove to the world that…

AIMS is a network of the continent’s centres of excellence in mathematics and sciences whose aim is to develop a pool of skilled mathematicians and scientists.
