President Paul Kagame received more than 20 students from Stanford Graduate School of Business, yesterday, at Urugwiro Village in Kigali. Speaking to the media after the meeting, the head of the US varsity students’ delegation, Neha Samdaria, said their discussions with the President focused on Rwanda’s economic development approach; tackling a number of inclusive development programmes that the Government is using to spur economic transformation of its people such as One Cow-Per-Poor-Family (Girinka), universal health insurance, education for all, agriculture, among others. Small Forex bureau operators could merge

Many small Forex bureau operators could merge following the review of the sector’s regulatory framework by the central bank. The new framework, gazetted on February 22, is part of a move the regulator said would help enhance professionalism and improve practices in the foreign exchange sector. Among other changes, the revised regulations require that bureaus increase the minimum operating capital from Rwf20 million to Rwf50 million, install modern equipment and Management Information Systems as well as hire staff with qualifications. The new regulations also require them to automate their services as well as provisions allowing clients to transact through their accounts for the implementation of cashless policies. BNR: Gives deadline for MFI savings claimants

The National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) has announced the deadline for registering Rwandans who had deposits in medium financial institutions that encountered losses in 2006 and who have not yet received 75% of their savings. The Government of Rwanda accepted to pay 75% to clients of financial institutions that were closed. Registration of affected people was held from 14th to 25th December 2016 but it was later realized that some people missed out in the process. Japan donates USD 18.2 million for the irrigation program

Japan Government has donated USD 18.2 million (Rwf 15 billion) to support an irrigation program in Rwamagana district. The support will be used to renovate and construct four water reservoirs and renovate other facilities in Rwamagana marshlands on 400 hectares, renovating 30 kilometers of irrigation canals, renovating roads and offering trainings on irrigation techniques among others. During the ceremony of signing agreements held on Friday, the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning (MINECOFIN),Claver Gatete said that the project is an additional to the one in Ngoma district irrigating 300 hectares of rice also funded by Japan. One million people to benefit from East African hydro project

Construction of the regional Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Project has kicked off at the Tanzanian border district of Ngara that is expected to benefit over a million people in East Africa when completed. Local farmers not benefiting from regional rules

Rwandan farmers are not benefiting from regional rules of origin because of high costs of production and low agricultural productivity, according to agricultural sector players. The regional rules of origin prioritise agricultural commodities wholly produced within the region mainly by removing import taxes. The issue was highlighted during the Grain Sector Consultative Workshop on the Rules of Origin in the proposed Tripartite Free Trade Area (TFTA) held on Friday in Kigali. It was organised by the Eastern Africa Grain Council (EAGC). REB: Announces new English teaching program

Rwanda Education Board (REB) has announced a revised program of training teachers to teach in English following the expiry of contracts of mentors, explaining that duties formerly exercised by mentors will now be responsibility of focal English teachers available at every school. REB has been training teachers in English language since 2009 when it adopted the policy of using English as a medium of instruction in schools. Zigama Credit and Saving Cooperative (Zigama CSS) for members from security organs including the military, police and correction services has announced to have made a profit of Rwf 6,800,000,000 in 2016, a 31% growth from 2015. Following a general meeting of Zigama CSS held yesterday, the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Zigama CSS, Dr. James Ndahiro told the media that members are delighted with the progress. “We earned 6.8billion in profit in 2016 equaling 31% compared to 2015 where the profit was Rwf 5.24 billion,” he said. UN to scale back DR Congo peacekeeping force

The United Nations Security Council will vote Friday to cut the number of troops in its peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo. US ambassador Nikki Haley said the force’s authorized strength of 19,815 would be cut by 3,600 — but that 3,100 of these places are already unfilled.
