Government institutions have been accused of recruiting incompetent and then mishandling personnel among other poor industrial relations practices. The issue was raised again this week as the Senatorial Commission for human rights and social welfare presented the analysis report on the matter to the senate in which it explained that the challenges do persist. Reinforcing memorial culture in post-genocide societies

A two-year comparative research seeking to reinforce memorial culture in Rwanda, Germany, South Africa and Uganda has been launched. This was announced at a workshop bringing together researchers, professors from academia, civil society, and public institutions concerned with post-conflict management in Kigali this week. The seminar was organised by Institute of Research and Dialogue for Peace (IRDP). The researchers said, without a sound memorial culture, reconstruction after genocide could be forgotten and lead to destruction again. The project is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service, which is a support organisation in the field of international academic co-operation. Dr Eric Ndushabandi, the director of IRDP, said the comparative research aims at transforming usual commemoration into memorial culture while fostering community healing in post-genocide and conflict…

Managing the fuel prices

A key component is the air filter, an inexpensive part that can increase fuel consumption if clogged Fuel prices have failed to come down. Blame the government, the fuel companies, whoever cares to listen but in this liberalised economy, demand and supply rules. And although demand for several fuel-sipping cars like the Vitz, Raum and Spacio have mushroomed in the market over the last few years, they still account for a very small percentage of cars on the road. They could ditch his party

Mugabe allies hint they could ditch his party Zimbabwean war veterans, who have given President Robert Mugabe key support in past, vowed Thursday to rally behind “competent” candidates in next year’s elections even those from the opposition. Chris Mutsvangwa, chairman of the association of veterans of the 1970s independence war, previously loyal to Mugabe, said the former fighters were ready to work with politicians considered enemies by ruling ZANU-PF. “We will not be bothered about political affiliation,” Mutsvangwa said. “We only want people who are competent.” “We can’t have a party run on non-democratic lines,” Mutsvangwa, told hundreds of the ex-guerrilla fighters at a meeting in Harare. Last year several war veterans’ leaders were arrested after issuing a strongly-worded statement denouncing Mugabe as “dictatorial” and…

New TB drugs – experts

Resistance risk for new TB drugs – experts Antibiotics such as bedaquiline, delamanid and linezolid have recently been added to the tuberculosis drug arsenal   New drugs for hard-to-treat tuberculosis strains may be fast rendered ineffective themselves if incorrectly used, a report warned Thursday, on the eve of World TB Day. Antibiotics such as bedaquiline, delamanid and linezolid have recently been added to the tuberculosis drug arsenal, which is dwindling as TB bacteria develop resistance to an ever-broader array of treatments. Much better control must be exercised over how these new drugs are prescribed and used, or “their effectiveness could be rapidly lost,” according to a report published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine. Resistance to antibiotics can develop when a prescribed medicine fails to kill…

Samsung backs away from planned split

The world’s biggest smartphone maker Samsung, assailed by a shambolic recall and embroiled in South Korea’s wide-ranging corruption scandal, on Friday backed away from a planned corporate restructuring. Following the embarrassing recall of the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone and under pressure from activist shareholders to improve corporate governance, Samsung Electronics said last year that it was considering splitting the company in two. Its vice-chairman Lee Jae-Yong, heir to the parent Samsung group, has since been arrested and indicted for bribery, along with four other senior executives, in connection with the graft scandal that saw ex-president Park Geun-Hye impeached. But at the Samsung Electronics annual general meeting in Seoul, board chairman Kwon Oh-Hyun said the firm had reviewed legal and tax issues around proposed division into…

Tanzanian minister sacked after condemning TV intrusion.

The sacking comes amid an uproar over the incident at one of Tanzania’s main private broadcasters, seen as yet another example of the restriction of basic freedoms since Magufuli came to power in October last year.
