Trump team ties to Russia

Democrats argue that the interference contributed to frontrunner Hillary Clinton’s defeat in the presidential election. FBI chief James Comey dealt Donald Trump a double blow Monday by confirming a probe into his election campaign’s links to Russia last year while repudiating the president’s claim that he was wiretapped by Barack Obama. In a high-stakes public hearing televised live from the US Congress, Comey took the extraordinary step of confirming that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating whether Trump campaign aides colluded with a Russian effort to influence the 2016 election. Comey’s bombshell statement undercut a White House effort to dismiss the controversy stalking Trump’s young administration — with the president once more dismissing talk of his team’s ties to Russia as “FAKE NEWS” as…

DEPRESSED? Avoid over thinking

Depressed individuals “don’t need to worry and ruminate,” Professor Roger Hagen of the university’s Department of Psychology says. “Just realising this is liberating for a lot of people.” Hagen and his NTNU colleagues Odin Hjemdal, Stian Solem, Leif Edward Ottesen Kennair and Hans M. Nordahl published a scientific paper on the treatment of depression using metacognitive therapy (MCT). “Some people experience their persistent ruminative thinking as completely uncontrollable, but individuals with depression can gain control over it,” Professor Hagen says. Thirty-nine patients – 16 men and 23 women – were treated over a 10-week period. After six months, 80 per cent of them had achieved full recovery from their depression diagnosis. “The follow-up after six months showed the same tendency,” Professor Hagen says.

RESEARCH: Differences in the human nose caused by climate

Big, small, broad, narrow, long or short, turned up, pug, hooked, bulbous or prominent, humans inherit their nose shape from their parents, but ultimately, the shape of someone’s nose and that of their parents was formed by a long process of adaptation to our local climate, according to an international team of researchers. “We are interested in recent human evolution and what explains the evident variation in things like skin color, hair color and the face itself,” said Mark D. Shriver, professor of anthropology, Penn State. “We focused on nose traits that differ across populations and looked at geographical variation with respect to temperature and humidity.” The researchers noted today (Mar. 17) in PLOS Genetics that “An important function of the nose and nasal cavity…

EAC: Polythene Materials Control Bill debate postponed

It remains unclear whether the East African Community Polythene Materials Control Bill, 2016 will ever be concluded as debate on it was on Wednesday adjourned by the regional Assembly now sitting in Kigali. Following a motion moved by Chairperson of the Council of Ministers, Dr Susan Kolimba, under the House’s rules of procedure, a key report on the Bill presented by the committee on agriculture, tourism and natural resources could also not be adopted. Dr Kolimba’s motion for adjournment –which may be moved without notice – under rule 30 of the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly was partly down to the fact that business leaders have requested for further consultations, while the Tanzanian government is yet to submit its views on the Bill. But…
