Who will save Ugandan workers from low pay exploitation?

Minimum wage is an old timer on the list of Uganda’s most talked about, publicly endorsed but non-implemented policies, with workers enduring exploitation from profit maximizing companies. Usher Wilson Owere, the Chairperson National Organization of Trade Unions in Uganda, a general in the war to enforce a minimum wage in Uganda, believes the elusive and much frustrated policy will soon make its way to our law books. “A minimum wage board has already been put in place, we already had a dialogue with the President [Museveni] and we agreed on sector by sector wage bill,” said Mr Owere, who has been in the trenches for ages struggling to have the policy in place. His union successfully filed a petition against Uganda at the International Labour…

Feeding your brain right

Many people spend lots of time worrying about their physical appearances more than anything else. Others will do this to keep healthy and avoid catching health-related diseases, but do we often think about feeding our brains? Being a very important and essential part of our body, there is need to pay extra attention to maintaining and preserving the function of the brain. According to medics, we are all at risk of brain degeneration. Statistics show that if you live to age 85 or older, your risk for Alzheimer’s, for example, is 50 per cent. So clearly it makes sense to do everything possible to nurture a healthy brain. Your food choices may be the most influential variable you might need to control regularly for a…

WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT ENERGY DRINKS

Researchers have found consuming four cans of energy drinks resulted in abnormal changes in blood pressure and heart rhythm within two hours according to Daily Mail. The researchers revealed 32 fluid ounces (just under a litre) of a commercially-available energy drink was found to contain about 108g of sugar (roughly 27 teaspoons), and 320mg of caffeine, close to the daily recommended daily limit, along with other substances such as taurine, ginseng and carnitine. “We decided to study energy drinks’ potential heart health impact because previous research has shown 75 percent of the base’s military personnel have consumed an energy drink,” Dr Emily Fletcher, of the US Air Force Medical Centre in Travis, California, said. ICC: Unfair to Africa

The sustained attack on the International Criminal Court (ICC) by the African Union came into sharp focus at the 2017 Mo Ibrahim Foundation annual Governance Weekend in Marrakech – Morocco on April 6-9. The Foundation chairman, Dr Mohammed Ibrahim, former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and ICC Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda, all put up a strong defence for the institution that has in the recent past become the object of much hate by the AU members. The narrative that ICC targets Africans unfairly should be rejected in toto, said Ms Bensouda. “A lot of African leaders choose to ignore how the numerous cases found their way to the ICC in the first place,” she said, disclosing that seven of them were referrals by various African governments.…

Kenya opposition forms alliance ahead of election

Kenya’s opposition lined up, yesterday, behind a single candidate, veteran political leader Raila Odinga, strengthening their challenge to the government in August’s polls. Former prime minister Odinga, 72, was named presidential candidate by senior leaders of the National Super Alliance (NASA) at a large rally in the capital Nairobi. Odinga will, for the second time, challenge Uhuru Kenyatta in a repeat of the 2013 election which he lost in the first round. However, this time five of the country’s main opposition leaders have united, something they always failed to do in the past. Musalia Mudavadi, a former vice-president who struck out on his own in 2013, said that this time he and others had “sacrificed personal ambitions” to present a united front to challenge Kenyatta…
